Versions of Haiku Ancient and Modern

from Asatarō Miyamori’s Anthology

The poems collected here are those Asatarō Miyamori selected for his 1932 Anthology of Haiku Ancient and Modern, an unreal tome (幻の名著). Aside from minor typographical corrections, the kanji, hiragana, and katakana that follow, along with their transliteration into rōmaji, are just as they appear in Miyamori’s text. The English-language versions are my own, and I dedicate them to the memory of my friend, the poet Troy Allen Richter (1976-2017). I thank all who supported and encouraged this work as it took shape over the last two years at the Haiku Anthology Twitter account (@haikuanthology). Above all I wish to express my love and gratitude to my wife Gillian Gass, first and best reader.
